Transport | More than half of mopeds failed 2017 inspection

From the 906 vehicles subjected to random inspections for road safety and pollution in 2017, the vehicle category that had the highest compliance with regulations failure rate was mopeds (50cc light motorcycles).
According to the data provided yesterday by the Transport Bureau (DSAT), 52 percent of these mopeds that were inspected failed to comply, namely due to the emission of exhaust pollutants.

Trucks, lorries and other commercial vehicles were the second group that presented low compliance with the law with an approval rate of 78 percent in total and 57 percent only for the gasoline powered ones.

Private vehicles and motorcycles were given an approval rate of 90 and 100 percent respectively.

In the bus category, buses from public transportation operators obtained an approval rate of about 98 percent. Approximately, 85 percent of tourist bus operators and 86 percent fromthe taxi category were compliant with regulations.

The measure came after the implementation of the new rules regarding motorized vehicles pollution emissions in July 2017, established by the Administrative Regulation number 30/2016.  The regulation has established tighter limits for exhaust emissions and has also changed the measurement methods and put in place random inspections on the road.

The DSAT also explained that regarding the public buses, the results were obtained in tests done in the operators parking places so as not to interfere with the operation of the vehicles. Overall, the DSAT acknowledged that 88 percent of the inspected vehicles have been approved (801).

The operations were performed by the Bureau staff with the cooperation of the Public Security Police Force (PSP) and resulted in a total of 99 operations.

The DSAT would like to remind vehicle owners and operators that if in the case a vehicle fails to pass the random inspection, a MOP600 fine can be imposed. Vehicles must then be fixed and apply for an individual inspection, which will be conducted at the vehicles inspection center. The cost for an individual inspection will be MOP2,000 for cars and trucks and MOP1,200 for motorcycles and mopeds.

This inspection must respect a given deadline and if it does not, an additional monthly fee will be added to the mentioned costs. The monthly fee will be the same amount as the total amount of the inspection. RM
