CHINA A Japanese woman in her 50s has been detained in Shanghai since June over her suspected involvement in spying activities, Kyodo news agency said yesterday. It’s the fourth Japanese citizen to be detained on spying charges since May, all in different parts of China.

PHILIPPINES The quick-thinking crew of a Philippine cargo ship thwarted a possible a hijacking or robbery at sea over the weekend in the volatile southern region by locking themselves in their quarters, the coast guard said. About eight men on two motorized outriggers boarded the MV Cecilia off Davao del Sur province, but the crew quickly locked all the vessel’s hatches and windows. The suspected pirates left empty-handed before a coast guard vessel arrived at the site, near Balut Island.

MEXICO Authorities say they’ve seized some 4 tons of shark fins and fish air bladders that were being shipped illegally to Hong Kong. The environmental prosecutor’s office says about 3.5 tons of dehydrated shark fins and a half ton of the corvina bladders were found in a container at the Pacific Coast port of Manzanillo over the weekend. It says the company shipping the products did not have a permit to do so.
