CE election still open to other candidates

1 ShowDataServletSeeking a second term, current Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, has already secured the support of 331 out of 400 of the Electoral College. However, he might not be alone in the running, as another candidate might secure the support of the remaining 69 members.
According to Radio Macau, as the Electoral College, who is voting on the CE election on August 31, has 100 more members than in the previous election held in 2009, this represents an additional effort for Chui’s team, said his representative Mr Vong Hin Fai.
In 2009, the current Chief Executive secured the support of 286 people out of 300, which was enough to guarantee that he would be the only candidate. Fifty signatures were needed for another candidate to run.
This year, however, each prospective candidate needs to secure the support of at least 66 members in order to run for office. As 69 members did not support Mr Chui Sai On’s election bid, another candidate might still run for election.
Yesterday, Vong Hin Fai handed in the 331 nomination forms they were able to collect at the Electoral Affairs Commission for the Chief Executive (CAECE).
“Our team made every effort to get in touch with the members of the Electoral College, but in June, many aren’t in Macau, as they travel for work or other purposes,” said Vong Hin Fai.
In a press release, Chui Sai On’s election office stressed that the electoral platform will be released during the campaign period between August 16 and 29.
Vong Hin Fai, an appointed lawmaker, said that, at this stage, citizens are welcome to provide comments and suggestions, which Mr Chui could consider when developing his electoral platform. These suggestions can be delivered in person at the election office, located in Avenida da Praia Grande, as well as by telephone or fax.
Furthermore, the electoral platform will also be promoted during the period campaign through Q&A sessions organized by the Electoral Affairs Commission.
Chui Sai On is so far running without any opponents.
On August 31, an Electoral College, comprising 400 members, will elect MSAR’s next Chief Executive.  CP
