Nearly 1,000 parking meters were reported to have malfunctioned across the city over the weekend and will likely extend into the week, but the local authority stated that violation tickets will not be issued to vehicles parked in affected spaces.
It first started on Saturday and as of yesterday, the management company of the city’s parking meters have managed to fix about half of them.
The cause of the failure is still being investigated and the company does not rule out the possibility of the system being hacked. It was unearthed on Saturday by drivers who wanted to pay for their parking. The machine did not respond and error messages were shown on the screens.
On the other hand, the Transport Affairs Bureau was aware of the incident at 8 a.m. following a report from the management company. The authority also ordered a report to be submitted no later than yesterday. AL
