Crime | Fossil smuggling busted by Gongbei Customs

Gongbei Customs confirmed that a batch of recently confiscated cargo contained fossils of ancient organisms.
The two fossil pieces were disguised as a batch of cross-boundary e-business cargo. They were discovered at the Zhuhai Checkpoint of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge.
The Gongbei Customs has authority over such affairs at the Bridge’s Zhuhai Checkpoint.
It is the first time such matter was found at the checkpoint.
In March this year, Customs officers discovered abnormal objects in a parcel for export. Later checks found two pieces of yellowish swirling shells with colorful glistering surface.
They were then sent to professionals, who confirmed they were fossils of Cephalopoda Ammonoidea, which lived during the same age as dinosaurs.
The customs authority thus reminds members of the public that pursuant to related laws and regulations, those who transport, mail, or carry paleontological fossils out of the country must truthfully declare this to customs and submit to customs approvals issued by the relevant entity.
According to laws and regulations in effect, the customs authority will supervise the export or exit of such paleontological fossils and works to stop the illegal exportation of such matter. AL
