Former triad boss assaulted in HK

A businessman who is suspected of being a former triad boss was attacked and injured by another man in the lobby of the Peninsula Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui on Sunday. Alleged former triad boss Kwok Wing Hung, who is nicknamed “Shanghai Tsai [Boy],” was having afternoon tea at the Peninsula Hotel when a man punched him in the face, reports the South China Morning Post (SCMP).
According to Apple Daily, the attacker had been able to approach the mysterious businessman despite the presence of Kwok’s four bodyguards. Kwok managed to evade the thrust of the attack, but suffered a minor injury to his eyelid.
Kwok Wing Hung is rumored to have been forced to exit the VIP gaming room business in Macau because of mounting gambling debts, and has become a controversial figure in recent years since his alleged connections with lawmakers were scrutinized by Hong Kong media in the run-up to the SAR’s 2012 Chief Executive elections.
Kwok was rushed to the Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital on Sunday while hotel security staff notified the police of the incident. The police investigators reviewing the video footage were able to identify the victim as the former leader of the Wo Shing Wo triad group.
Emerging from the hospital yesterday morning, Kwok told the media that he was not seriously injured.
The SCMP reports Kwok as having joked: “Someone said [I was] killed. You see – I’m in good shape […] just bumped into a table corner. You see how handsome [I am].”
