The Monetary Authority of Macao (AMCM) plans to gradually expand testing scenarios for the digital pataca project, exploring applications in public transportation and smart contract technology.
Authorities said the move aims to promote payment innovation while enhancing transaction security for consumers and merchants.
Phase one of the digital pataca project was completed in 2025. Sandbox testing is now conducted through a whitelist system covering retail payments, online public service fee payments and integration with the “GovPay” online payment platform.
The authority said it will continue working with relevant departments to broaden testing scope in an orderly manner. Public transport services are expected to be considered for inclusion in future sandbox trials as part of efforts to promote cashless mobility.
In a written inquiry, legislator Leong Hong Sai also asked about optimizing electronic payment options for public transport. The Transport Bureau replied that multiple electronic payment methods are already available for bus fares, while taxis are required to provide at least one electronic payment option.
For the light rail system, the government plans to upgrade automated fare collection equipment. New light rail gates and ticket vending machines supporting electronic payments are expected to be installed by the third quarter of 2026.
