The 28th Macau International Fireworks Display Contest concluded with the victory of Japan’s Marutamaya Ogastsu Fireworks, followed by the teams from Romania and Canada as the first and second runners-up, respectively.
In this year’s contest, the scheduled evenings each had a special theme, which the firework displays for that night were designed to show.
On the night of October 1, the theme was “Celebration in the Sky,” with splendid fireworks presented by the teams from Romania and China in celebration of the 67th Anniversary of the Founding of the People’s Republic of China. Their firework displays brought a festive vibe into town on the National Day.
This year, the 10 teams were from Thailand, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Japan, Korea, Italy, Canada, Romania and China, in order of appearance in the contest. The contest marked the first time a Romanian team was featured in the event.
Many local citizens and visitors flocked to see the firework shows on the National Day holiday, resulting in bustling crowds at different vantage points in the Macau Peninsula and in Taipa at the time of the final presentations.
Last year, the Taiwanese team represented by Yung-feng Firecrackers & Fireworks Co. Ltd won the contest, followed by  the Chinese and French teams.
Since its inception in 1989, the Macau International Fireworks Display Contest has developed into one of the region’s signature events, and is held every Saturday evening in September, culminating in the grand finale on National Day. JZ
