July exports up 8.8%, diamonds drive growth

The merchandise exports rose 8.8% year-on-year in July to MOP1.29 billion, while imports fell 1.9% to MOP10.29 billion, resulting in a trade deficit of MOP9 billion, the Statistics and Census Service reported. Re-exports, totaling MOP1.15 billion, surged 9.9%, led by a 93.5% increase in diamonds and diamond jewelry. Local exports increased 0.8%, driven by pharmaceuticals and organic chemicals, while imports of beauty products and gold jewelry climbed 33.1% and 32.4%, respectively. Apparel and food imports saw declines.
