Local charity run to support Philippine school library project

The Macau Makiling International Eagles Club (MMIEC) is hosting its “Wings on Sole Summer Fun Run 2026” this Sunday (July 26) at 6 a.m. at the Taipa Waterfront leisure area, with proceeds going toward building a school library and providing essential resources for Tigbao Integrated School in Davao de Oro, Philippines.

The charity event, organised in partnership with Pinoy Runners Macau and the ASEAN Friendship Association in Macau, will feature 5km and 10km run categories, with the start and finish line set at the waterfront venue. Registration closed on July 20, with around 100 participants signed up to take part.

MMIEC president Bhog Villanueva said the project aims to provide critical educational resources for students in need. “We intend to build a small school library for them as part of our project,” Villanueva told the Times.

According to the club’s Facebook page, the event aims to support students at Tigbao Integrated School in Barangay Tigbao, Maragusan, Davao de Oro, with proceeds going toward school improvements, new classrooms, and essential student resources. “Run for your fitness, run for the fun, but most importantly – run for a cause!”

Cash prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in both categories. In the 5km race, the champion will receive MOP400, while the first and second runners-up will take home MOP300 and MOP200, respectively. The 10km category offers the same prize structure.

Villanueva said construction of the library is expected to take approximately three months, depending on the design and structure, and that donations of any amount or building materials are welcome.

Villanueva said preparations for the event have progressed smoothly, though weather conditions remain the main concern.

According to the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG), a tropical cyclone east of the Philippines is gradually intensifying and is expected to move within 800 kilometres of Macau tonight, leading to the issuance of Tropical Cyclone Signal No. 1.

Despite the forecast, organisers remain confident the event will proceed as planned, with preparations largely on track.
