Mercedes-AMG unveils driver lineup in bid to regain FIA GT World Cup

Mercedes-AMG has announced it will compete at this year’s FIA GT World Cup in Macau with a total of three cars representing two teams.

At the ninth FIA GT World Cup, Craft-Bamboo Racing will line up with record winner Maro Engel and Hong Kong’s Adderly Fong, while Lucas Auer will take the wheel of the other Mercedes-AMG GT3 for Tigani Motorsport.

Mercedes-AMG is the most successful manufacturer at Guia’s GT race, having won five of the eight editions held. Two of these wins came at the hands of Engel, who took the top spot on the podium in the inaugural edition in 2015 and again in 2024.

Other wins for Mercedes-AMG came from Edoardo Mortara in 2017 and Raffaele Marciello in 2019 and 2023. The FIA GT World Cup was suspended from 2020 to 2022 due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.

The news also marks the somewhat surprising return of Mercedes-AMG to the event after its absence in 2025.

As the Times previously reported, sources cited by major motorsport news outlets have suggested that Mercedes-AMG’s absence from the GT World Cup was because the brand’s racing department deemed its newest model, the “C192,” unsuitable for competition. The model was reportedly significantly different structurally from its predecessor, the C190, as the C192 is a 2+2-seater rather than a two-seater.

According to the same sources, Mercedes-AMG needed to develop an entirely new GT3 model from the ground up to replace the C190, based on the production AMG GT 63. The project was reportedly not expected to be completed until 2027.

Still, contrary to some of these forecasts, the brand unveiled the first glimpses in late March this year of two different models that would comprise the new generation of racers, including the new GT3 and the so-called Black Series.
