MGTO rolls out Pop mart project to raise global profile, draw visitors

The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has announced a partnership with the toy company Pop Mart to present a tourism project titled “Pop Mart Macao Citywalk.”

The project includes large-scale installations set up at four locations in Macau, aiming to leverage the influence of these characters to make Macau a topic of online conversation.

According to MGTO, this project will boost Macau’s image “as a travel destination globally and raise the city’s international profile.”

The project also aims to “foster integration across ‘tourism+IP’ and manifest Macau’s vibrant dynamic as a world center of tourism and leisure.”

The event will include a consumption lucky draw and check-in activities, aiming to “boost the flow of visitors and attract travelers from around the world to Macau for a trendy, fun trip exploring and spending in local communities, for tourism and economic revival,” the office remarked.

Taking place over 108 days between June 6 and Sept. 21, the MGTO and Pop Mart partnership aims to invite visitors to explore the city and discover the various installations while visiting the surrounding areas.

The inauguration ceremony will take place at the Taipa Village Historical Center Archway on June 6 at 2:30 p.m., marked by the unveiling of a 7-meter-high “Labubu” installation.

Visitors throughout the city can discover other Pop Mart characters like Baby Molly, Crybaby, and Dimoo, which will be displayed at Calçada da Igreja de São Lázaro, Camões Square, and St. Augustine’s Square.

Among the designs on display, alongside the 7-meter-high “Labubu,” there will be a 4-meter-high “Dimoo” installation that MGTO says merges with Macau’s World Heritage architecture.

The content of the entire project will be presented at the Pop Station, located in the Ritz Building, Senado Square, which will include a special edition “Molly Egg Tart.”

Additionally, there will be check-in zones and a pop-up sales zone.

Visitors and residents can take photos at all the event locations to share on social media in exchange for a “Pop Mart Macao Citywalk” postcard, while supplies last.

Spending at local businesses to enter the lucky draw

As announced, the project features a consumption lucky draw, which includes not just e-payment services in Macau but also covers numerous payment tools in Hong Kong, mainland China, Thailand and Malaysia, to attract more visitors to Macau.

Users can join the lucky draw instantly by making a single purchase that reaches a required value (MOP100 for e-wallets from Macau, Thailand and Malaysia, HKD100 for Hong Kong’s e-wallet, and RMB100 for mainland China’s e-wallet) at local businesses via payment tools including MPay, Alipay, TrueMoney, and Touch ’n Go eWallet. Participants have a chance to win unique souvenirs themed “Pop Mart Macao Citywalk.”
