According to statistics released yesterday by the Monetary Authority of Macau, the money supply in the territory retreated in the month of February. As total deposits increased at a faster pace than total loans, the overall loan-to-deposit ratio of the banking sector dropped in comparison to a month earlier.
Resident deposits dipped 0.9 percent from January to MOP456.6 billion, of which deposits denominated in MOP, HKD and RMB fell by 0.6 percent, 0.6 percent and 9.9 percent, respectively.
Meanwhile domestic loans to the private sector edged up by 0.4 percent to MOP390.8 billion, of which HKD, MOP and RMB accounted for 66.1 percent, 28.1 percent and 0.5 percent, respectively.
At the end of February, the loan-to-deposit ratio for the resident sector remained virtually unchanged at 65.9 percent, while the combined ratio for both the resident and non-resident sectors dropped 0.7 percentage points to 85.3 percent.
The currency in circulation in Macau decreased by 1 percent in February in comparison to the previous month.
