An educational consultant who accepted more than USD2 million from a Hong Kong couple then failed to a deliver on his promise to get their sons into Ivy League universities has been convicted of federal fraud charges.
Mark Zimny was convicted in U.S. District Court in Boston of 13 counts, including multiple counts of wire fraud, unlawful money transactions and false tax returns.
Prosecutors say Zimny told Gerald and Lily Chow the money would help get their sons into elite American universities, but he kept the money for himself.
Zimny was freed on USD100,000 bail and GPS monitoring pending sentencing July 9. He faces up to nine years in prison. His lawyer tells The Boston Globe he plans an appeal. The Chows have sued Zimny to get their money back.
