Two scammed in separate investment and impersonation frauds

The Judiciary Police (PJ) are investigating two separate fraud cases involving investment scams and impersonation of law enforcement, resulting in combined losses of RMB170,000 and HKD50,000.
In a press conference held Wednesday, the PJ announced that in one case, an elderly woman lost RMB170,000 after falling victim to an online investment scam.
The victim met a man through a social media platform last month, who persuaded her to invest through a fake trading website.
After depositing the money, her online account displayed over RMB600,000 in returns. However, when she attempted to withdraw the funds, she was asked to pay a “thawing fee” equal to the displayed amount.
Realizing it was a scam, she reported the incident to authorities.
In a separate case, a male tourist from mainland China was targeted by scammers posing as international law enforcement.
On Saturday, July 19, he received a call from someone claiming to be an Australian immigration officer.
The call was later transferred to an alleged “public security officer,” who accused him of being involved in a crime.
The victim was coerced into a video call and screen-sharing session, during which he transferred HKD50,000 in two payments. LV
