Typhoon Wipha slows casino revenue with 3% weekly decline

Typhoon Wipha brought a dip in the gaming sector last week, with average daily casino revenue falling by 3%, according to data cited by Citigroup.
The bank reported that between July 14 and 20, average daily gross gaming revenue dropped from MOP679 million to MOP657 million, attributing the decline in part to travel disruptions and canceled weekend trips caused by the storm.
“This weekly slowdown was lower than expected, partly due to cancellations of some weekend trips caused by the typhoon,” the report said, as cited in a Macao Daily report,
According to their reporting, Citi’s analysis indicates that Macau’s total gaming revenue for the first 20 days of July is projected to be around MOP 13.6 billion.
The bank maintained its forecast for the full month at approximately MOP21 billion, representing an 86% recovery to pre-pandemic levels and a 13% increase from last year.
The report detailed that VIP room betting decreased 3–5% month-on-month, while mid-tier betting fell 2–4%. Yet, Citi found that the winning rate in VIP rooms improved compared to the previous week.
Another multinational investment bank, UBS, offered a similar outlook.
The report states that UBS recorded a monthly decline of about 3% in average daily revenue, which fell to MOP683 million. However, UBS added that this figure reflects a 14% increase compared to the same period in 2024. NS
