UTM records largest-ever intake with more than 1,000 new students

The Macao University of Tourism (UTM) welcomed more than 1,000 new undergraduate and postgraduate students on Friday, marking its largest intake in history as the institution launches its first dual-campus learning model with Hengqin.

According to UTM, the new cohort includes students from Macau, mainland China, and 14 other countries and regions. To support outstanding talent, the university presented UTM Admission Scholarships offering full or half tuition waivers to high-achieving entrants.

The Friday orientation, held at the Grand Hall of the Macau Tower Convention & Entertainment Centre, coincided with UTM’s first flag-raising ceremony of the 2026/2027 academic year.

Rector Dr. Fanny Vong Chuk Kwan told the assembly that the university was expanding its program offerings to equip students for a rapidly changing world.

“This year, the Macao University of Tourism proudly opens its doors to more than 1,000 new undergraduate and postgraduate students,” Vong said.

“Each of you brings your own background and perspectives, and together you will make our UTM community more dynamic and diverse.”

New programs and Hengqin expansion

This academic year, UTM is introducing two new programs, a Bachelor of Science in Management and Data Science and a Master of Business Administration. Vong said the additions respond to growing demand for professionals who can combine analytical skills with management expertise.

“We are proud to launch our new undergraduate program in Management and Data Science,” she said. “Designed to develop students’ data analysis abilities alongside their management knowledge, it prepares them for business environments.”

The MBA program, meanwhile, addresses the need for management professionals in Macau, the Greater Bay Area, and beyond.

Beyond new degrees, UTM marked a milestone by establishing its presence in the first phase of the Macao-Hengqin International Education (University) Town. More than 200 postgraduate students will study across 10 programs at the Hengqin campus under a dual-city learning model.

“This academic year also marks a monumental milestone in UTM’s development,” Vong said.

“Following the recent inspection of the first phase of the Macao-Hengqin International Education University Town by the Chief Executive of Macau, Mr. Sam Hou Fai, UTM is firmly committed to implementing the Chief Executive’s directives for this initiative.”

Vong added that the arrangement will enable students to engage more deeply in research and practical learning while gaining a firsthand understanding of Greater Bay Area development.

Preparing studentsfor change

During her opening speech, Vong encouraged new students to explore new frontiers and step beyond their comfort zones. “Starting university marks a new stage in your lives, one that comes with new responsibilities and the potential for growth,” she said. “This is your time to explore new areas of knowledge, challenge conventional wisdom, and broaden your horizons.”

“Do not be afraid to step out of your comfort zone or to ask tough questions. While university life will inevitably involve moments of adjustment and uncertainty, please remember that you will always have the support of your teachers, classmates, and the wider UTM community.”

The rector also highlighted UTM’s alignment with national and local development plans.

“By aligning with the nation’s 15th Five-Year Plan and Macau’s Third Five-Year Plan and connecting academic rigor with real-world industry needs, UTM continues to support Macau’s development by preparing graduates who can contribute to tourism, culture, business, and other emerging fields,” she said.
