VNL Finals begin today as world’s top volleyball teams battle in Macau

The Women’s Volleyball Nations League (VNL) 2026 Finals will officially begin today at the Macau East Asian Games Dome, with eight of the world’s top women’s volleyball teams competing over five days of high-stakes action.

The tournament, which runs through July 26, features defending champions Italy alongside China, Brazil, the United States, Japan, Turkey, Canada, and the Netherlands – all vying for the coveted finals title.

Today, Italy faces the Netherlands at 4 p.m., followed by Brazil versus Japan at 7:30 p.m. Tomorrow, Türkiye takes on Canada at 4 p.m., while the United States meets host China at 7:30 p.m. After a rest day on Friday, the semifinals take place on Saturday with matches at 4 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and the bronze medal match is on Sunday at 3:30 p.m., followed by the final at 7:30 p.m.

At a press conference held yesterday at the Galaxy International Convention Center, tournament organizers confirmed that all preparations are complete and the stage is set for what promises to be a thrilling week of competition.

Chinese national team captain Gong Xiangyu spoke to the media about the team’s readiness, expressing particular anticipation for Thursday’s quarterfinal opener against the United States. She acknowledged that the American squad has strengthened its roster for the 2026 season, bringing a faster offensive tempo to the court.

“We believe our form has been steadily improving,” Gong said. “Our goal is to perform at an even higher level in our opening match.”

China’s head coach Zhao Yong echoed his captain’s sentiments, stating that the team will give their utmost effort and is fully focused on the crucial first clash with the U.S.

Lei Si Leng, acting director of the Sports Bureau (ID), confirmed that all logistical and venue preparations have been finalized. Speaking at the press conference, she highlighted efforts to extend the tournament’s reach beyond the stadium and into the local community.

The goal, Lei explained, is to bring the energy of the women’s volleyball finals to neighborhoods across Macau and reinforce the city’s vision of becoming a “City of Sports.”

The tournament tips off today, with the quarterfinal match between China and the United States expected to be one of the early highlights of the competition.
