Woman loses MOP5 million in phone scam

The Judiciary Police (PJ) reported four recent phone scams involving callers impersonating mainland authorities. In the most serious case, a young mainland woman said she lost the equivalent of MOP5.05 million after following instructions from fraudsters who claimed she was under investigation. Between July 24 and September 2, she transferred funds 12 times before realizing the deception. Another mainland man reported losses of HKD870,000, while two students – one local and one from the mainland – recognized the scam and avoided financial losses.
