Body recovered near Taipa linked to earlier bridge incident

Authorities have recovered the body of a middle-aged Macau resident from waters near Taipa’s Estrada Nordeste on Saturday morning.

He was later identified as the man who jumped from the Governor Nobre de Carvalho Bridge (old bridge) two days earlier (May 8), the Judiciary Police (PJ) announced.

Customs officers spotted the body at 6:35 a.m. on Saturday.

Following this, the man’s body was transported to the Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal, where firefighters and medical personnel confirmed the man’s death. The authorities found no visible signs of criminal injury or foul play during preliminary examinations.

The death was initially classified as a “body discovery case.” By Saturday afternoon, the PJ linked the victim to a May 8 incident in which witnesses reported a man jumping from the old bridge.

In a letter dated May 8, 2025, at 7:20 p.m., in which the wife of the victim urgently requested government assistance through the Macau Economy and People’s Livelihood Promotion Association regarding her husband’s disappearance.

The letter states that her husband went missing after jumping from the bridge, and at the time of the letter, the wife was unaware whether any parties had initiated search and rescue operations.

The letter appealed for government coordination to mobilize professional rescue teams immediately to avoid missing the critical rescue window.
