CE commends lawmakers for upholding constitutional order and supporting government

The members of the seventh Legislative Assembly will conclude their terms on October 15, with Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai praising their effective upholding of the constitutional order, their support for the government, and diligent fulfillment of their duties under the Basic Law.

Despite challenges, their efforts resulted in notable achievements across various areas.

In his speech at a gathering with all legislators on Friday, Sam remarked that “the significant achievements of the seventh Legislative Assembly marked a new chapter in the legislative work of the Macau Special Administrative Region (MSAR) and laid a robust foundation for the incoming Legislative Assembly,” according to a statement released by the Government Information Bureau (GCS).

He stated: “The Legislative Assembly’s members are recognized for their accomplishments, noting that they have steadfastly upheld the constitutional order established by the Constitution of the People’s Republic of China and the Basic Law of Macau, ensured the effective and smooth operation of the governmental system led by the executive branch as established under the Basic Law, and consistently supported, cooperated with, and supervised the MSAR government in its law-based governance.”

He expressed gratitude for the exceptional contributions of all Legislative Assembly members and their support for the incoming government, praising the work of the Legislative Assembly highly.

The seventh session of the Legislative Assembly concluded on Friday, with Sam highlighting that the 86 laws passed addressed important areas such as improving the legal framework for safeguarding national security, enhancing governance capabilities, promoting moderate economic diversification, addressing public welfare, and refining the rights and obligations of legislators.

“The seventh Legislative Assembly advanced the modernization of the MSAR’s legal system.”

He also commended the Legislative Assembly for effectively fulfilling its oversight duties, completing various tasks, and fostering strong relationships with all sectors of society while actively proposing constructive feedback and suggestions.

Highlighting the success of the seventh Legislative Assembly, the Chief Executive outlined three key insights: namely, upholding the principle of “patriots governing Macau,” “clear division of responsibilities,” and “improving legislative efficiency and quality.”

He praised the new government for its strong start and significant progress, attributing much of this success to the seventh Legislative Assembly’s unwavering support and collaboration.

“The Government will enhance collaboration with the legislative and judicial branches, unite society, leverage the strengths of the ‘One country, two systems’ principle, align with the motherland, and systematically implement policy measures,” Sam remarked, highlighting his administration’s efforts to confidently navigate external uncertainties in this new term.
