Drunken Dragon Dance heralds birth of Buddha celebrations

Performers stage the drunk dragon dance during the Drunken Dragon Festival to celebrate Buddha’s birthday in Macau, May 25.
Buddha’s birthday fell on Monday this year according to the Chinese lunar calendar. Recognized as an item of China’s national intangible cultural heritage, the Drunken Dragon Festival originates from a Macau legend of a Buddhist monk and a divine dragon who saved people from the plague during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
