French May Cinema to feature Callas – Paris 1958

The documentary Callas – Paris, 1958 by French director Tom Volf will be screened in Macau today as part of the French May Cinema Programme.
Organized by the Alliance Française de Macau in partnership with its Hong Kong counterpart, the French May Arts Fest, and local firm XCESSU Limitada, the screening will be held at Studio City Cinema.
The film showcases the legendary soprano Maria Callas in a historic 1958 performance at the Paris Opéra, her first in France, broadcast live across Europe. Restored in 4K and Dolby Atmos, it presents a vivid portrayal of Callas at her vocal and artistic peak.
Prior to the screening, there will be a presentation by Michel Reis, presenter of Radio Macau’s Scherzo, and Peter Gordon, an opera lecturer and arts writer based in Hong Kong. Commissioned by the Fondation Callas, the film marks the centenary of Callas’ birth and was six years in the making.
With commentary from French television personalities and rare archival footage, Callas – Paris, 1958 offers a unique glimpse into one of opera’s defining moments.
