Jason Chao criticizes New Macau lawmakers

Jason Chao says that he is upset with the “incorrect” attitude of the two elected  New Macau Association (ANM) lawmakers, Au Kam San and Ng Kuok Cheong, who officially formed a new association, the Macao Community Development Initiative, a few days ago.
“I respect the freedom of association of the two legislators,” he said, adding that the two veteran members of the ANM haven’t been actively contributing to the association for the past two years. “Since the election we have seen a decline in the quality and quantity of the reports by the legislators,” Chao pointed out.
The activist reiterated that Au Kam San and Ng Kuok Cheong were elected to the Legislative Assembly based on two tickets presented by the New Macau Association, and the caveat that they should be aware of their responsibilities towards the organization in charge of overseeing their work.
In Chao’s own words, the association is concerned that the two legislators are shifting their roles to the recently created association, which is generating rumors among the public and New Macau members alike. Speaking on the sidelines of an election held at the Portuguese Consulate (see text below), Jason Chao said that Au Kam San had previously criticized New Macau members for forming the ‘Macau Conscience’ organization, but he now seems to be heading the same way in terms of political responsibilities and the representation of roles.
Regarding the possibility of Au Kam San and Ng Kuok Cheong quitting New Macau, Jason Chao says that nothing indicates this, reaffirming that by creating a new association the two members are not violating any rule, but are in fact contributing to raise doubts over the quality of their work.
The episode seems to have added more fuel to the fire in terms of the relations between the association’s ‘young and old guard.’
The lack of understanding between the two lawmakers and the New Macau’s board began one year ago when Ng Kuok Cheong and Au Kam San decided to separate their office from the association, claiming ‘lack of support’ for their activities. This led to an exchange of accusations with Jason Chao, who was by then the New Macau president.
