The director of the Central Liaison Office, Li Gang, stressed that participation in regional economic cooperation is crucial to Macau’s development of a diversified economy. Speaking to mainland media, he said that developing only within its own territory is not enough for Macau’s economic diversification, as the city is small in size. “Developing a diversified economy is not only an important mission of the MSAR government but also a request from the Central Government,” he stated, “it supports Macau to extend its entrepreneurship to the mainland and to build another Macau on the mainland, which is very helpful to the MSAR’s prosperity and stability.”
“Only by diversifying the economy can prevent Macau from economic crisis,” said Li. According to him, it was the Macau people’s adherence to the “one country, two systems” policy, the efforts of the MSAR government, and the central government’s support that jointly facilitated the region’s leapfrog development.
“Earth-shaking changes have taken place here over the past 15 years,” the director added, recalling the scenes he witnessed when Macau celebrated its return to the motherland in December 1999. According to him, the central government has paid much attention to the region’s development, and, “the 15 years of development in Macau also proved a great success for the policy of ‘one country, two systems’.
