Local markets to continue selling live poultry

Macau’s markets will continue to operate regularly and to sell live poultry, with authorities yet to have called a halt to the sale of live poultry here. Sale of live birds in Guangdong has been suspended for one month due to the spread of bird flu, particularly the H7N9 virus.
The Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM) told Lusa news agency that local markets and their live poultry stalls will be operating normally, but also that food inspection measures will be reinforced. IACM added that it has not received any specific information from the Guangdong authorities yet, and declined to comment any further.
According to the Guangzhou Daily, authorities have suspended the sale of live poultry after 50 cases of bird flu were recorded in 15 cities of the neighboring province. So far, 36 percent of the collected samples have tested positive for the H7N9 virus.
