Man arrested for allegedly raping his domestic helper

A 54-year-old local businessman has been arrested for allegedly raping his newly hired Myanmar domestic helper after threatening not to process her work permit, the Judiciary Police (PJ) said yesterday.
The suspect, surnamed Lam, was intercepted at his residence on the morning of June 7 following a police report filed by the victim the previous day. The case has been transferred to the Public Prosecutions Office.
According to investigators, the victim, a Myanmar national, was hired through a friend’s introduction in late May. After completing employment procedures on June 2, she began working for Lam, who is separated from his wife and has two children.
Prosecutors allege that Lam threatened not to apply for the victim’s Blue Card, the identification document required to work as a non-resident in Macau, and allegedly raped her on June 2.
The following day, he allegedly used the same threat to coerce her again. The victim resisted, after which Lam kicked her out of his residence.
Investigators found strong evidence suggesting the suspect committed rape and sexual coercion, according to a PJ statement. The victim filed her complaint on June 6, one day after being forced out.
