Mainland traveler caught smuggling HKD900,000 at border

A mainland Chinese man was caught by Zhuhai Customs authorities while attempting to reenter the mainland with HKD900,000 strapped to his waist.

According to customs officers, the man was carrying bundles of HKD1,000 banknotes concealed under his belt.

A preliminary report states that the source of the money remains unknown, but it is suspected to be linked to illegal currency exchange activities.

The man was intercepted and searched while crossing through the green channel (designated for travelers with “nothing to declare”) at Gongbei Port.

In a separate case, the same customs authority caught a cross-border bus driver attempting to smuggle 60 used mobile phones from Macau into the mainland. The man was stopped during an inspection at Hengqin Port.

Gongbei Customs reported that when the driver was using the “Guangdong-Macao Joint One-Stop Lane” at Hengqin Port, officers found his behavior suspicious, noting that he was walking heavily. A further inspection revealed 60 mobile phones strapped to both sides of his legs with transparent elastic bands.

Zhuhai authorities have recently ramped up anti-smuggling inspections for travelers arriving from Macau. Several cases have involved individuals attempting to smuggle various items, including mobile phones, console game discs, and dried seahorses, into the mainland.
