Merchandise export, import surge in April

The city’s total merchandise export amounted to MOP1.06 billion in April 2021, up 71.9% year-on-year, according to the latest data from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).
The latest DSEC report indicated that the value of re-exports rose by 70.2% to MOP906 million patacas in April, with that of watches; wine; and diamonds and diamond jewelry surging by 505.7%, 377.4% and 118.5% respectively.
Meanwhile, the value of domestic exports grew by 82.4% to MOP154 million.
From January to April this year, the total value of merchandise export increased by 24.8% year-on-year to MOP4.52 billion, of which the value of re-exports (MOP3.94 billion) and domestic exports (MOP579 million) rose by 24.1% and 29.2% respectively. The total value of merchandise imports expanded by 116.6% year-on-year to MOP43.43 billion. Merchandise trade deficit totalled MOP38.91 billion for the first four months of 2021, up by MOP22.48 billion from MOP16.43 billion
a year earlier.
In April alone, merchandise imports swelled by 265.7% year-on-year to MOP13.74 billion.
DSEC said that the imports of gold jewelry, perfumes, handbags and wallets, and beauty, cosmetic and skincare products rocketed by 4,814%, 1,395.1%, 1,165.5% and 1,137.4% respectively, whereas that of other made-up textile articles declined by 56.2%.
The merchandise trade deficit in April totaled MOP12.68 billion.
From January to April this year, the total value of merchandise imports expanded by 116.6% year-on-year to MOP43.43 billion. LV
