MGM has launched a fully localized, end-to-end recycling and upcycling system for used playing cards, building on technology originally developed in 2023 for the world’s first smart, automated card-shredding assistance system.
The “Innovation and Technology Empowerment – MGM Localized Playing Card Recycling and Upcycling Program,” unveiled yesterday, makes MGM the first integrated resort in Macau to operate a complete closed-loop system for processing used playing cards locally.
The system processes used cards on-site using automated intelligent shredding equipment, converting them into shredded material that is then transformed into recycled fibers without using water. Those fibers can be used to manufacture eco-friendly packaging materials, such as filler material and recycled boards.
The program expands on a 2023 collaboration between MGM and local technology firm Fnetlink Technology Company Limited, which developed the automated card-shredding solution. That earlier system was designed to improve operational efficiency and reduce physical strain and injury risks for staff.
According to company representatives, the robotic shredding mechanism underwent three generations of development, evolving from a single-arm configuration to a five-arm system capable of processing hundreds of decks in about 15 minutes.
MGM said the new localized model departs from conventional practices, which typically involve shipping used cards across borders for processing. Keeping the process within Macau reduces the carbon footprint associated with cross-regional transport while retaining materials within the local economy.
Once fully implemented, the program is expected to recycle and upcycle approximately 3,000 tons of used playing cards annually, achieving a 100 percent recycling rate.
Officials said the operation could ease pressure on local solid waste disposal infrastructure while establishing a steady supply of recycled fiber for downstream manufacturing sectors. The zero-water processing method also eliminates wastewater discharge, addressing a common environmental concern associated with traditional paper recycling.
Kenneth Feng, chief executive officer and executive director of MGM China Holdings Limited, said the company has been exploring sustainability solutions through innovative technology.
“In response to the National 15th Five-Year Plan’s call to harness innovation and technology for green transformation, this program reflects our efforts to enhance resource efficiency through technology,” Feng said.
He added, “It also highlights MGM’s commitment to working with local tech enterprises to transform research and development achievements into practical applications.”
The program is among several cross-sector collaborations between gaming operators and local technology firms in Macau, where authorities have been encouraging economic diversification and green industry development.
Fnetlink, established in 2003 and initially focused on telecommunications and network services, has since expanded into artificial intelligence and smart systems. Its partnership with MGM represents one of several local tech firms applying advanced solutions within Macau’s integrated resort sector. Both companies indicated that further applications of the recycled materials are under consideration, including potential consumer-facing products made from the processed fibers.
