Non-resident population decreases slightly

The region’s total population was 648,500 by the end of September, up by 100 quarter-to-quarter, according to information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

Non-resident workers totaled 176,666 at the end of the third quarter, a decrease of 2,028 over the previous quarter.

In the third quarter of 2017, Chinese immigrants (1,274) and individuals granted the right of abode (387) rose by 498 and 5, respectively, on a quarter-to-quarter basis.

Meanwhile, the bureau indicated that the female population (343,400) accounted for 53 percent of the total.

813 cases of marriage registration were recorded in the third quarter, down by 120 quarter-to-quarter. In the first three quarters of 2017, there were 2,840 cases of marriage registration, down by 72 year-on-year.

1,690 live births were delivered in the third quarter of 2017, up by 94 quarter-to-quarter. Male babies totaled 900 and the sex ratio at birth stood at 113.9, corresponding to 113.9 male babies per 100 female babies.

In the first three quarters of 2017, the number of live births dropped by 343 year-on- year to 4,846.

Mortality totaled 529, an increase of 7 quarter-to-quarter. The top three underlying causes of death were neoplasms (162), diseases of the circulatory system (118) and diseases of the respiratory system (113).

In the first three quarters of 2017, mortality dropped by 152 year- on-year to 1,558.
