OCBC Macau cycling challenge takes place around Cotai Dome

More than 300 people have registered for the Macau leg of the Greater Bay Area Road Cycling Challenge, which will be held on Sunday, Aug. 30, on a closed circuit around the East Asian Games Dome in Cotai.

The event, organized with support from OCBC Macau and the Macau Cycling Association, will bring together riders from Macau, mainland China and Hong Kong in four categories: youth races for participants aged 4 to 16, elite and open divisions, and a charity family group.

Kelvin Lou, chief executive of OCBC Macau, said at a Tuesday news conference that the 2026 OCBC Cycle Macau has developed from a community activity into a cross-regional Greater Bay Area event intended to encourage exchange among residents of the region.

This year’s expanded format is designed to accommodate varying ages and abilities, Lou said, allowing both competitive cyclists and families to take part.

The race will be held on roads surrounding the Macao East Asian Games Dome, with traffic restricted to create a closed course for participants.

Lei Chu Kon, president of the Macau Cycling Association and a member of the organizing committee, said the event marks the first edition to be held in its new format. He highlighted participation from across the Greater Bay Area, with mainland Chinese cyclists accounting for more than 30% of registrants so far.

Lei said the organizers hope the event can help raise the standard of cycling in Macau while promoting sports, tourism and cultural exchange across the region. The longer-term aim is to broaden its scale and establish it as a recognizable sporting brand within the Greater Bay Area.
