RUGBY ACADEMY | Rugby touch hotels

The Macau Rugby Club hosted the 1st RugbyTouch tournament for Hotels on Saturday, 29th May at the TIS playing fields.
Teams from eight local hotel groups had entered, a mixture of new and experienced players. A very hot morning meant difficult conditions for the players. Despite that, a number of interesting and tightly contested games took place during the initial group stage.
In Group A, Galaxy Gazelles won all three games – defeating MGM King of Lions 2-1 followed by close wins over Wynn Macau Marauders (1-0) and Venice Lions (1-0). Group B proved to be another tight finish, Melco had impressed with two wins, against London Bulldogs (2-0) and MGM Roarers (also 2-0). Wynn Palace had a win over MGM Roarers (2-0) and a 1-1 draw with London Bulldogs, setting up their final group game with Melco as winner take all. An entertaining game saw Wynn Palace emerge as comeback winners (2-1) to set up an eagerly anticipated Cup final against Galaxy Gazelles.
Prior to the Cup final, Wynn Macau Marauders edged a close final against MGM Roarers 1-0 to win the Shield. In the Bowl final, London Bulldogs came out on top against MGM King of Lions, 2-0. The Venice Lions defeated Melco 2-0 to win the Plate.
The Cup final was a tight affair with both teams conceding little ground. However, a mazy run by Galaxy’s captain Anacleto Cabaca brought the much-needed breakthrough score and a later try sealed the win, 2-0 for Galaxy Gazelles over Wynn Palace.
Overall a very good morning’s rugby which was played in a fine spirit and it is hoped that this competition will become a regular feature in the local rugby calendar. Donald Shaw, MDT
