Macau-based journalist and essayist Joaquim Magalhães de Castro will present the photo album “Sagres – Our Barge” at the Portuguese Consulate tomorrow at 6.30 p.m.
Built in Hamburg in 1937, the tall ship Sagres was added to the Portuguese Navy fleet in 1962, and has since become a symbol of Portugal.
The vessel has been used as a sailing school ship, complementing the technical and academic components taught in the Naval School. The ship has made several trips around the world. The trilingual book (Portuguese, English and Chinese) depicts aspects of the two trips made by Joaquim Castro aboard the Sagres.
“This photo album is intended to be a reliable and emotional record of intensive day-to-day life on board, played by the various members of a fantastic and very supportive crew with whom I studied. It is also a tribute to those who welcomed me so well. I boarded the Sagres as a stranger and left the ship as a member of a strong, loyal and caring family,” says the author in the book’s introduction.
