SMG to hoist Typhoon Signal No. 3 as Mitag approaches

The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) announced yesterday that there is a medium-to-high chance the No. 3 typhoon signal could be issued between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. today, while the likelihood of a blue storm surge warning remains low.

SMG raised Typhoon Signal No. 1 at midnight yesterday, urging residents to remain alert as tropical storm Mitag moves northwest toward the eastern Guangdong coast.

As of 11 p.m. last night, tropical storm Mina was located about 390 kilometers southeast by east of Macau, moving northwest at roughly 18 km/h.

“Although the storm’s circulation is relatively small, its intensity and path remain uncertain,” SMG said. “Based on current forecasts, Mitag is expected to enter within 200 kilometers of Macau during the daytime [today].”

The city is expected to see heavy rain and thunderstorms today, with stronger winds. Tomorrow, frequent heavy showers, thunderstorms, and gusty conditions are likely, and low-lying areas may face short-term flooding from intense rainfall.

Meanwhile, another tropical depression in the northwest Pacific, about 2,140 kilometers southeast by east of Macau and moving northwest at 15 km/h, is expected to develop into a super typhoon and enter the South China Sea next week.

Last night, the Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) announced a full-day suspension of classes for primary, preschool, and special education students, while secondary schools will operate as usual. LV
