First typhoon of the year not expected to cause any impacts

Aforecast issued yesterday by the Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) indicated that the first typhoon of the year would approach Macau in the early hours of today.
According to the SMG, a low-pressure area located in the central part of the South China Sea, approximately 800 km from Macau, developed into a tropical depression and is moving slowly toward Hainan Island and western Guangdong province.
As a warning, the SMG hoisted tropical cyclone signal No. 1.
The weather bureau also noted that while the tropical depression is expected to strengthen and move toward the area between Hainan Island and western Guangdong in the coming days, its distance from Macau will increase, making it less likely the region will be significantly impacted.
Still, due to the system’s strengthening, it will likely bring stronger winds and frequent showers with thunderstorms later this week.
The SMG also noted that the presence of the tropical depression near Macau is contributing to a rise in temperatures, which is expected to continue until the typhoon dissipates. According to the latest forecast, that should happen by the afternoon of Sunday, June 15.
For today, the SMG forecasts high air temperatures, with the maximum expected to reach or exceed 33 degrees Celcius in some areas.
Yesterday, Macau recorded a maximum temperature of 35.6 degrees at the Outer Harbour weather station. All other stations recorded temperatures above 34 C degrees except the Mount Fortress station, which recorded a maximum of 33.7 degrees.
