The Transport Bureau (DSAT) plans to review zebra crossings on cross-district roads and crossing facilities near road junctions in the North District this year to improve pedestrian safety and reduce traffic accidents.
According to DSAT, this review is part of ongoing efforts to optimize the travel environment in various districts, in a reply to lawmaker Ngan Iek Hang.
Since 2019, the bureau said that it has aimed to enhance 329 zebra crossings, with 287 completed so far.
Additionally, since late 2021, “omni-directional pedestrian crossing facilities” have been installed at 10 suitable junctions to reduce pedestrian crossing times and provide additional crossing space.
In 2024, the DSAT introduced “vertical speed reduction markings” and “pedestrian crossing advance warning signs” to alert drivers to pedestrian crossings, encouraging them to reduce speed and be cautious.
The bureau stated that it will continue to monitor traffic safety measures in neighboring regions and consider adopting new safety equipment suitable for the region.
The bureau is also exploring the possibility of adding warning functions to the “Macao Smart Go” mobile application to enhance road safety. LV
