NEPAL Landslides and flooding triggered by heavy rain have killed at least 47 people in southern Nepal and left thousands homeless, police said yesterday. The death toll was expected to go up, with around two dozen other people missing and feared dead after three days of heavy downpours.

INDIA Soldiers and rescue workers in northern India pulled out 13 bodies from two buses buried in mud from a landslide that was triggered yesterday by heavy monsoon rains. Police said more victims may still be found in the debris.

ISRAEL The world’s oldest man who lived through both World Wars and survived the Auschwitz concentration camp has passed away just a month short of his 114th birthday, his family said Saturday. Israel Kristal was born to an Orthodox Jewish family near the town of Zarnow in Poland in 1903.

EGYPT’s prosecution ordered yesterday the detention of four people including two train drivers for 15 days over a deadly train crash near the coastal city of Alexandria that killed 43 people and injured scores, judicial officials said.
