This year will include performances of “Anna Karenina” from Boris Eifman’s ballet company, as well as Edward Lam’s “Art School Musical” – an adaptation of a classic Chinese tale.
The CCM will showcase the two performances on a number of dates throughout November and December. “Anna Karenina,” Tolstoy’s acclaimed masterpiece, is the classic tale of one of literature’s most charismatic women and the love triangle between Anna, her husband, and her lover. Driven by passion, Anna is the fearless protagonist who defies social norms when she abandons domestic safety to pursue a passionate affair with an aristocratic officer.
Set to Tchaikovsky’s compositions, the ballet’s choreography reflects the psychological twists and turns of the story, exploring controversial topics through a highly physical and glamorous ballet.
This winter will mark Eifman’s return to Macau after their debut at CCM with “Red Giselle” back in 2004. In addition, members of Eifman’s company will host a workshop on November 29 to introduce their methods to local dancers.
“Art School Musical” is a thought-provoking reflection on love and art inspired by the Chinese legend “The Butterfly Lovers.” Having premiered last May, this humorous and personal vision is performed in Mandarin and addresses a variety of themes, including gender issues and the essence of ingenuity.
The cast for the performance includes 18 actors, who are mostly from Taiwan and Hong Kong but also feature Macau’s rising star, Jordan Cheng.
