BRIEFS | Typhoon signal 1 hoisted

The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) yesterday raised typhoon signal number 1 as typhoon “Kujira” approaches Hainan Island. SMG had said that raising a higher signal was unlikely. Kujira is the first typhoon to hit China this year. It was expected to make landfall on or near the southern island of Hainan yesterday.

Conference on Macaology this week

The 4th International Conference on Macaology will be held tomorrow and Thursday at the old library of the University of Macau. Forty scholars from mainland China, Portugal, Australia, Japan and Macau will attend the event to discuss the latest developments in Macaology. The conference is organized by UM’s Center for Macau Studies, along with the Macau Foundation and the Social Sciences in China Press. The center defines Macaology as a interdisciplinary subject that explores the development model of Macau civilization by studying its history, culture and social life through literature and cultural heritage.

COUNA-BNU--renato-marques-BNU makes donation to support UM’s development

The Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU) has donated MOP10.6 million to the University of Macau in support of teaching and academic research, the bank announced in a press release. The donation was provided through the University of Macau Development Foundation (UMDF). A chair professorship at the Faculty of Business Administration will be named in honor of BNU in order to show appreciation for the bank’s donation. A donation presentation ceremony was held recently at UM. BNU stressed in a press release that for over a century it has been contributing to the development of Macau’s society, namely through supporting the city’s educational system, and through providing students with scholarships. The bank added that it has also been supporting other cultural and sporting activities.
