Chief Executive (CE) Ho Iat Seng has extended his condolences over the passing of Lui Che Woo, founder and chairman of Galaxy Entertainment Group.
In a statement from the Government Information Bureau, Ho expressed his deep mourning via a condolence letter sent to Lui’s family members.
“The Chief Executive praised Dr Lui as a highly-respected entrepreneur and philanthropist, and acknowledged his significant contributions to the appropriate diversification of Macau’s economy over the years,” the statement read.
“The establishment of the ‘Lui Che Woo Prize – Prize for World Civilization’ underscored Dr Lui’s steadfast belief in the spirit of universal love. The Chief Executive deeply mourns the passing of Dr Lui, and extends his condolences to the family,” it added.
Established in 2015, the Prize aims to advance world civilization and inspire a more peaceful world, according to the official site dedicated to the award.
The Prize comes with a cash award of HKD20 million and has honored 12 awardees to date, including former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and The Nature Conservancy organization.
Passing away at the age of 95 last week, Lui was among Hong Kong’s wealthiest individuals, with an estimated net worth of USD14.5 billion according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Staff Reporter
