Crime | Man arrested for using fake UnionPay card

1-union-pay-2-bloombergA Hong Kong man was caught intentionally using a counterfeit UnionPay card that he obtained on the street to make a purchase in Macau, according to the Judiciary Police.
The kitchen aid, aged 25, was arrested by the police early on Tuesday morning after he attempted to buy five mobile phones, worth HKD50,000, with the card in a store in NAPE.
The store’s staff called the police after questioning the authenticity of the card based on its rough surface, while continuing the transaction on the POS machine despite it being disconnected from the power.
The suspect admitted to purposefully coming to the region in order to commit the crime, with an aim to dodge Hong Kong security authorities despite realizing that it was a forged card through an authentication website.
In a separate case, a mainland Chinese man remains at large after allegedly withholding the salaries of two illegal workmen who also hailed from the mainland, while the police authorities’ inquiry continues.
One of the victims had allegedly known the suspect since last year and met him again in early July. He started working for a construction site in Cotai with his assistance between July 26 to September 23. However, despite having received MOP28,000 for the first two months, the 44-year-old failed to obtain the outstanding MOP17,000.
Another 53-year-old victim, hired by an unknown individual to work at the same worksite, was yet to receive MOP40,000 for his four-month remuneration as the suspect vanished with his salary.
