Family disputes remained stable despite brawl: IAS chief

An armed altercation between two brothers in their 50s in the Areia Preta area left them in need of emergency treatment with knife wounds on Wednesday night, as Social Welfare Bureau (IAS) president Wilson Hon said yesterday that reported family disputes have remained relatively stable in recent years.

A brawl erupted at a residential flat on Rua Central da Areia Preta around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, with the Public Security Police (PSP) reporting that it was likely triggered by family issues.

Both victims accused each other of starting the violence and provided conflicting accounts. Bloodstains were found on the floor and walls of the corridor, and both men sustained knife wounds to their hands and heads.

In response to a recent rise in domestic violence cases involving weapons, the IAS chief emphasized during a media briefing that the bureau has formed an emergency support team to work closely with the police.

“We will provide comprehensive support to families, prioritizing the well-being of the injured parties,” Hon told the press yesterday.

“Additionally, we have various counseling and follow-up programs for perpetrators. Recognizing the unique nature of domestic violence, we also address the needs of other family members. Our colleagues are specifically assigned to manage follow-up efforts in this area,” he added.

Concerning the fight that occurred on Wednesday evening, Hon confirmed there is no evidence of any previous conflicts within the family involved.

While specific details about the incident are not yet available, he pledged that the authorities are taking steps to investigate the matter, with the primary focus of the initial investigation being to offer emotional support to the affected family and help them cope with the crisis in a safe manner.

He also noted that further reports are necessary to determine whether the case requires additional investigation.

“In handling special family cases, we focus on stabilizing family emotions, particularly how different perspectives during a crisis may influence others or potentially trigger new crises. These are our key areas of focus. We will gather more information based on reports from our colleagues regarding other circumstances.”

According to the official, the situation surrounding domestic violence has remained stable in recent years, particularly regarding disputes among brothers.

Historically, violent incidents were more prevalent between spouses or between parents and children. However, since the implementation of the Domestic Violence Law in 2016, there has been a significant decrease in cases of domestic violence against children. He noted, “This reflects the effectiveness of the law in terms of prevention.”

Hon said that awareness of domestic violence has notably increased within families and communities, with many now recognizing that violent behavior is unacceptable and could lead to legal consequences.

The IAS president stated that current social and economic conditions have not significantly impacted family disputes, which remain stable.

He noted that the authorities have set up reporting channels to assess cases as they arise and, in instances of severe violence, the police will be involved for appropriate action.
