Father’s Day Lawmakers call for expanded support for fathers

Lawmakers Leong Hong Sai and Ngan Iek Hang marked Father’s Day by extending gratitude to the city’s fathers and calling on the government to strengthen policies that support fathers’ well-being and family welfare.

The duo urged reforms to paternal leave, expanded elder care programs, and improved mental health services to address challenges faced by working fathers and aging parents, according to recent reports.

Leong added that employers and community groups should collaborate to promote gender equality through parenting courses and education surrounding men’s role in caregiving.

To address Macau’s aging population, Leong proposed a “health initiative for aging fathers” – offering free check-ups and cancer screenings, alongside preventive care education.

Leong praised recent increases in elderly subsidies and childcare allowances but stressed that demanding work schedules leave many fathers struggling to balance responsibilities. He advocated extending paternity leave and introducing flexible parenting leave to encourage active fatherhood.

Meanwhile, Ngan focused on the unique struggles of single fathers, calling for better job training and AI-powered mental health platforms. “He deems tailored employment aid and counseling are essential to reduce stress for breadwinners and promote work-life balance,” he said.

Starting today, parents with permanent Macau ID cards can apply for an annual child-raising allowance of MOP18,000 per toddler. The government projects total spending on this program will reach MOP270 million this year. NS
