Gov’t intensifies efforts to cultivate local musical talent

The Cultural Development Consultative Committee held its first regular plenary meeting of the year yesterday, with a key agenda item focused on nurturing Macau’s musical talent through the Macao Orchestra Limited’s upcoming training program, set to launch later this year.

After the closed-door meeting, Cultural Affairs Bureau president Deland Leong told the media that the program will be named the Macao Youth Musician Training Program, with its curriculum scheduled to launch this year.

The program aims to improve employment prospects for local music professionals studying symphonic and Chinese orchestral instruments, supporting the development of Macau’s performing arts talent pipeline. “We hope to further cultivate musical talent and provide them with a platform to participate in professional orchestra performances,” she said.

Leong said the initial plan is to admit about 10 trainees for intensive training, allowing them to study in two orchestras – the Macao Orchestra and the Macao Chinese Orchestra.

The program will also include community performances and one-on-one coaching. “After studying music, those interested in pursuing careers in professional orchestras must undergo assessments,” she said. “We aim to raise their professional standards, giving them a stronger advantage and more experience when auditioning for professional orchestras in the future.”

Leong also said yesterday’s meeting covered major cultural events scheduled over the next two months.

She remarked that the Macao International Parade will be held on March 29, along with the third Macao International Comedy Festival, the newly introduced Culture and Sports Carnival, and the Macao Reading Festival, which is typically observed in the fourth week of April.

This year’s international parade theme is “Maritime Silk Road: Cultural Encounters,” which is expected to feature performance groups from both Macau and abroad to showcase the charm of the city’s Historic Centre. Leong specifically mentioned the participation of a Portuguese troupe.

The newly introduced Culture and Sports Carnival, scheduled for April, will integrate cultural and sporting activities with a marketplace to offer residents a variety of cultural experiences.
