Han and Ørnbøll secure Macau FIA Karting Asia-Pacific titles

John Han of Hong Kong and Denmark’s Signe Pejs Ørnbøll won the junior and senior titles, respectively, at the FIA Karting Arrive and Drive Asia-Pacific Championship on Sunday. The championship took place at the Coloane Karting Track.

The FIA Karting Asia-Pacific Championship, held Sept. 11-13 and organized by the Sports Bureau (IS), the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and the Automobile General Association Macao-China, drew drivers from 15 countries and regions.

The event used an “Arrive and Drive” format, requiring competitors to race with identical engines, chassis and tires, according to the FIA.

According to the FIA, track activity was suspended Sunday morning because of weather, preventing the remaining qualifying heats from taking place.

As a result, organizers said that the results of Saturday’s single heats were used to determine the grids for the junior and senior finals.

In the junior championship, Han secured the title by overtaking Australia’s Knox Black on the final lap, completing four wins from four races over the weekend. China’s Liu Bowen finished third.

FIA notes that Han, who leads the FIA Karting Academy Trophy Junior standings, will compete in the final round of that series in Viterbo, Italy, next month.

In addition, the senior race produced a four-way contest as the damp circuit began to dry. New Zealand’s Amelia Phillips crossed the line first, but a front-fairing penalty dropped her to third, promoting Ørnbøll to the race and championship victory. Singapore’s Conrad Garrow finished second.

The top 17 finishers in each category qualified for the FIA Karting Arrive and Drive World Cup in Malaysia in November. NS
