Hengqin tourism thread: Penguin babies and eco-branding

Tourism operators in Hengqin are stepping up efforts to promote the island as a family-friendly and environmentally focused destination, following the birth of a record number of penguin chicks at Chimelong Ocean Kingdom.
According to mainland business outlet 21st Century Business Herald, the theme park recently reported the successful hatching of dozens of penguin chicks, marking one of the largest breeding outcomes of its kind at a single facility in China. The development has been widely promoted across Chinese media platforms during the New Year holiday period.
Chimelong Ocean Kingdom said the breeding programme is the result of long-term investment in habitat simulation, veterinary care and animal management systems. The park operates one of Asia’s largest indoor penguin facilities and has previously highlighted its cooperation with domestic research institutions on animal welfare and conservation practices.
Local authorities view the development as part of Hengqin’s broader tourism strategy, which aims to diversify offerings beyond large-scale entertainment by incorporating elements of ecological education and family-oriented attractions. Media reports describe this approach as part of a wider “full-area tourism” plan, integrating theme parks, hotels, cultural venues and natural landscapes across the island.
Hengqin plays a key role in regional tourism planning linked to Macau’s economic diversification. As a jointly developed cooperation zone, the island is positioned to attract visitors travelling to and from Macau while offering complementary leisure options on the mainland side.
During the recent holiday period, tourism officials reported increased visitor flows to Hengqin, supported by improved cross-border transport links and coordinated promotional campaigns. The penguin births were featured prominently in seasonal marketing materials targeting families and short-haul travellers within the Greater Bay Area.
Authorities said they will continue to promote Hengqin as a destination combining leisure, education and ecological awareness, with further tourism projects scheduled to come online later in the year.
