Local woman loses over HKD950,000 in phone scam

A local woman lost over HKD950,000 in a phone scam impersonating law enforcement, the Judiciary Police reported. In early July, she received a call from a Mandarin-speaking man claiming to be a Beian immigration officer, accusing her of fraud and money laundering. The call was transferred to a fake “public security” official, who instructed her to join a video interrogation and enable screen sharing. She later transferred the money, believing it was a “guarantee deposit” to avoid detention.
