MGTO cracks down on illegal lodging

The Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) said it is intensifying efforts to combat illegal lodging. From January 1 to 20, 2026, authorities conducted 19 joint operations, inspected 25 suspected units, and sealed 17 properties potentially operating as illegal hotels. Last year, 230 such units were shut down. Social media posts promoting “homestays” have drawn scrutiny, with some showing multiple beds partitioned in a single unit renting for MOP100 to MOP150 each.
