Money supply grows as lending contracts in May

According to data released yesterday by the Monetary Authority of Macao (AMCM), the city’s broad money supply rebounded in May. M2 rose 1.2% to MOP815.7 billion, with annual growth of 7.9%. Resident deposits climbed 1.3% to MOP794.7 billion, while total banking sector deposits reached MOP1.36 trillion. However, loans to the private sector fell 4.6% to MOP993.7 billion, reflecting a 1.4% drop in domestic loans and a 7.6% decrease in external loans. The resident loan–to–deposit ratio slipped to 49.3%. The non-performing loan ratio increased to 5.7% amid the decline in lending.
